On Sunday, August 9th, both Russia and Ukraine reported the latest developments in the fighting in eastern Ukraine. Russia claimed that its forces had gained control of two residential areas in the Donetsk region. Ukraine did not confirm this information and stated that Russian forces continued to launch intense attacks in the direction of Kostiantynivka, which were repelled by Ukrainian troops.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Russian forces had taken control of the villages of Vasyutinske and the city of Toretsk. Vasyutinske is located east of the important eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk, while Toretsk is situated southwest of Druzhkivka.
Ukrainian authorities have not confirmed the alleged change in control of these two residential areas. Reuters reported that it is currently not possible to independently verify the claims of either side about the situation on the battlefield.
Currently, the fighting in the Donetsk region remains concentrated on multiple fronts, with intense battles continuing in the Kostiantynivka area. The Ukrainian General Staff of the Armed Forces stated on the evening of the 9th that Russian forces had launched multiple rounds of attacks in Kostiantynivka, Illinivka, and surrounding areas, all of which were repulsed by Ukrainian forces 24 times.
The Ukraine-based intelligence project DeepState, monitoring changes on the Russian-Ukrainian front line, indicated that Russian forces had recently made progress in the outskirts of Kostiantynivka and near Illinivka, continuing their advance near Chasiv Yar west of Bakhmut.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in a video address on the evening of the 9th, did not directly address Russia’s claims about the change of hands in the two villages. However, he mentioned Ukrainian forces conducting operations in Dobropillia, Kostiantynivka, and Kramatorsk.
The Russian-Ukrainian front line currently extends about 1,200 kilometers. Russian forces have been launching offensives in the Donetsk region for several months, gradually advancing, but no major changes have been observed along the entire front.
