The 2026 Bristol International Balloon Fiesta kicked off on Friday, August 7th at the Ashton Court Estate on the outskirts of Bristol, UK, and will continue until Sunday, August 9th. The event showcases over a hundred uniquely shaped hot air balloons from around the world.
Founded in 1979, the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is the largest annual hot air balloon event in Europe and one of the most famous summer outdoor activities in the UK. This year marks its 48th edition. The event attracts tens of thousands of visitors and over a hundred hot air balloon teams from around the globe each year. The flying of hot air balloons relies on natural elements such as weather and wind direction, making the event challenging and unpredictable but also incredibly fun.
One of the highlights of the event is the spectacular mass balloon ascents that take place every morning (around 6 am) and evening (around 6 pm) during the festival. Hundreds of colorful and uniquely shaped hot air balloons take to the skies simultaneously with the sunrise or sunset, creating a breathtaking scene. As various balloons ascend into the sky, the audience erupts in applause and cheers, capturing the moment with photographs.
In addition, on Friday and Saturday evenings (around 9 pm), the highly anticipated Night Glow takes place. As night falls, the hot air balloons remain tethered to the ground and pilots synchronize intermittent ignition of powerful burners to pulsating music, creating a dazzling display resembling giant lanterns. Visitors can safely experience the tremendous sound and heat waves of the flames erupting from the ground.
Apart from enjoying the unique hot air balloons, visitors can also indulge in music, food, and games at the event.
