In this episode of “News Talk,” host Fuyao interviewed Mr. Ma Yan, the Chinese director of “Unrestricted Warfare,” delving into the original intentions of the creation, background research, and the numerous challenges faced during filming.
This film, adapted from real events, focuses on the challenges faced by a Canadian vaccine expert and his family during the early stages of the pandemic. Director Ma Yan stated that this film tackles subject matters that domestic filmmakers are unable to touch and attempting to depict the real world of Mainland China overseas presented an even greater challenge. However, it was surprising to find that the film crew received a lot of support and encouragement from overseas Chinese during the production process.
Reflecting on the initial inspiration for making the film, Director Ma Yan recalled the discrimination and hate faced by the global Chinese community during the pandemic. As a Chinese filmmaker, he felt a responsibility to clarify the truth through cultural works. However, the program encountered multiple obstacles during filming. Chinese Communist Party officials pressured Ma Yan’s family, cutting off their source of income; a lead actor was forced to withdraw three days before filming began due to suspected anonymous threats from the Chinese Communist Party, and premiere events were unreasonably canceled.
“Unrestricted Warfare” is a film that embodies the cultural responsibility and courage of the Chinese people. Through a realistic story and thorough research, it reveals the truth behind the pandemic and the Chinese Communist Party’s “unrestricted warfare” strategy.
