【Epoch Times October 3, 2026】Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Joseph Wu, led a delegation of business executives on a visit to the friendly nation of Guatemala. They met with Guatemalan President Arevalo, representing President Tsai to express gratitude for Guatemala’s steadfast support of their friendship and Taiwan’s international participation. They hope to take concrete actions to create opportunities for cooperation between Taiwan, the United States, and Guatemala.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan issued a press release stating that Minister Joseph Wu led the delegation to visit the Republic of Guatemala in Central America from September 30 to October 2. On October 1, they met with Carlos Ramiro Martinez and presided over the inauguration ceremony of a donation of diplomatic information equipment and space renovation projects by the Guatemalan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The two foreign ministers also conducted a political consultation meeting and issued a joint statement afterwards. Martinez hosted a banquet for the visiting delegation.
Martinez emphasized that the longstanding friendship between Taiwan and Guatemala since 1992 is based on upholding sovereignty, national self-determination, promoting international peace, defending freedom, and sharing democratic values. Over the years, the two countries have worked together on numerous cooperation projects that benefit the well-being of their people. Particularly, Guatemala appreciates Taiwan’s initiatives in public health and medical projects, including the construction of a public oncology hospital.
Minister Joseph Wu mentioned Taiwan’s promotion of “comprehensive diplomacy” and the “Prosperous Nation Project” aims to elevate economic, technological, and talent training actions and collaborate with Guatemala to enhance national prosperity and development. He sees this collaboration as a model to attract other countries in the region to join the democratic alliance alongside Taiwan. The invitation of representatives from various industries aims to respond to President Arevalo’s desire for investment attraction.
Both Minister Joseph Wu and the Guatemalan Foreign Minister hope to continue jointly promoting various cooperation projects on the basis of their existing cooperation. They aim to enhance economic and trade procurement and exports between Taiwan and Guatemala, as well as to incorporate AI technology elements into the “Chip Road” project in Guatemala to create a new outlook. They also recognize the potential of Guatemala in promoting electric buses and suggest combining Taiwan’s strengths in information technology to jointly advance the electrification and smartification of public transportation platforms. The Guatemalan Foreign Minister expressed agreement and eagerness to evaluate this proposal.
After the meeting, the Guatemalan Foreign Minister praised Taiwan as a democratic country with flourishing economic development, technological innovation, and commitment to sustainable development. The 92-year solid and enduring friendship between the two countries is based on shared values of freedom, democracy, and rule of law.
Minister Joseph Wu and the delegation inspected the planned site for the oncology hospital and presided over the inauguration ceremony of the Guatemala City International Airport Control and Emergency Response and Event Management Center, showcasing Taiwan’s emphasis on bilateral cooperation projects. With 30 business representatives accompanying the delegation to promote bilateral economic and trade exchanges, they will inject greater impetus into future Taiwan-Guatemala cooperation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentioned that on the afternoon of the 1st, Minister Joseph Wu met with President Arevalo, expressing gratitude on behalf of President Tsai for Guatemala’s unwavering support for Taiwan’s international participation. He introduced the members of the delegation from the fields of green energy and smart transportation, AI digital and space technology, biotechnology, medical health, tourism, and finance and trade, as well as Patrick Wilson, Senior Director of the U.S.-Taiwan Business Council, to actively create cooperation opportunities for Taiwan, the United States, and Guatemala.
President Arevalo acknowledged Taiwan’s assistance in promoting various cooperation projects that benefit the livelihood of the people of Guatemala and endorsed the trilateral cooperation initiative between Taiwan, the United States, and Guatemala. This new model of cooperation will strengthen the relationship between Taiwan and Guatemala, and in the future, Guatemala could serve as a hub for Taiwan to collaborate with other Latin American countries, expanding trilateral and multilateral cooperation benefits.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that on the 1st, Minister Joseph Wu received warm receptions from President Arevalo and Foreign Minister Martinez of Guatemala. Besides reminiscing, they exchanged views on deepening Taiwan-Guatemala friendship and bilateral cooperation. They continued various inspections on the 2nd and hosted a business exchange meeting of the Guatemala-American Chamber of Commerce.
