In response to Chinese Communist leader Xi Jinping’s remarks on WWII history during his visit to the United States, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council pointed out that the Chinese Communist Party’s dissemination of erroneous historical views cannot erase the historical fact that the Republic of China was a solid ally of the United States during World War II. The false statements and incorrect historical narratives from the CCP regarding Taiwan cannot withstand scrutiny, and they cannot change the objective fact that the Republic of China is a sovereign country.
Xi Jinping mentioned the Second World War during a banquet on the 24th, saying, “Over 80 years ago, the Chinese and American people fought side by side against Japanese militarist aggression and opened up the famous Hump Route. During the War of Resistance against Japan, Chinese soldiers and civilians rescued hundreds of American pilots at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives. This friendship forged in blood and fire will be passed down through generations.”
Regarding the unfounded remarks about Taiwan made by Chinese Communist leader Xi Jinping during his visit to the United States, the Mainland Affairs Council emphasized that the Republic of China is a sovereign country, and the fact that it and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate to each other is an objective reality and the status quo in the Taiwan Strait that will not be changed by Beijing’s self-deception. The CCP’s dissemination of erroneous historical views cannot erase the historical fact that the Republic of China was a solid ally of the United States during World War II.
The Mainland Affairs Council pointed out that the CCP repeatedly uses interactions between the US and China to promote its stance on Taiwan in an attempt to link the Taiwan issue with the US-China “constructive strategic stability relationship.” However, strategic stability between the US and China is not an excuse for the CCP to annex Taiwan or disrupt regional peace and the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.
The council also noted that “the root cause of tension in the Taiwan Strait lies in the increasingly aggressive expansionist actions of the Beijing authorities in recent years, including continuous provocations by Chinese military aircraft and ships against Taiwan, routine law enforcement patrols in our eastern sea areas, threatening first island chain countries like Japan and the Philippines, challenging the US-led, rule-based international order, and becoming the biggest threat to stability in the Taiwan Strait and the region.”
“The Beijing authorities’ discourse on World War II is a complete distortion of historical facts,” the Mainland Affairs Council emphasized. The People’s Republic of China, founded in 1949, did not exist during World War II, and history has proven that according to Mao Zedong’s instructions, the CCP during World War II focused mainly on its own development, with seven parts on development, two on coping, and one on resisting Japan. The Republic of China truly fought alongside the United States. Moreover, during the Korean War, the CCP advocated opposing US intervention, becoming America’s primary adversary. The CCP’s erroneous narration cannot erase the historical contributions of the Republic of China during World War II.
The council reiterated that the government’s cross-strait policy stance is consistent and steady, adhering to the “Four Adherences,” maintaining the current situation, defending the right of the 23 million people of Taiwan to decide the future of Taiwan. “The distorted remarks of the CCP cannot change the objective fact and the status quo that the Republic of China and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate in the Taiwan Strait. We urge the authorities of the CCP to cease intimidation and pressure against Taiwan, pragmatically face the reality of cross-strait relations, engage in dialogue with our elected government, and facilitate the positive development of cross-strait relations.”
