A serious car accident occurred on Wednesday (September 2) in the southern part of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, where a tour bus carrying dozens of passengers overturned on a desert road, resulting in at least 22 deaths and 28 injuries.
According to media reports, the accident took place on a desert road between the popular resort towns of Dahab and Nuweiba in South Sinai province. This region, located along the coast of the Red Sea, is known for its beaches, coral reefs, and magnificent mountain landscapes, attracting a large number of tourists from around the world every year.
The bus involved in the incident departed from Cairo and was originally headed to the capital of Jordan, Amman, with a total of 43 people on board, including 22 Jordanian passengers. The Egyptian Ministry of Health initially reported 16 fatalities in the accident, but later raised the death toll to 22.
Official Jordanian media stated that 10 Jordanian citizens were among those confirmed dead.
Photos from the scene show the severely damaged overturned bus, with debris scattered all around, creating a heart-wrenching sight.
Following the incident, the Egyptian Ministry of Health swiftly dispatched 20 ambulances to the scene to transport the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar, ordered an escalation of emergency response levels and instructed relevant departments to provide all necessary emergency medical services to the injured.
Egyptian authorities have not yet disclosed the specific cause of the accident, as related aftermath and investigative work are ongoing. However, local media reports suggest that a preliminary investigation indicates the bus driver was speeding, leading to loss of control and the vehicle overturning.
Egypt often experiences frequent traffic accidents due to reckless driving, poor road maintenance, and lax enforcement. According to official statistics, nearly 6,000 people died in road traffic accidents nationwide last year.
