Mother Shot Dead in Massachusetts Home, Son Arrested in Vermont

Vermont State Police arrested 22-year-old Ryan Hanafin on Thursday (October 8th) in connection with the death of his mother, Andria, who was found shot in the kitchen of their home in Reading, Massachusetts earlier that morning.

According to Vermont State Police, they had been searching for Hanafin in Warren, Vermont, where he was believed to have been in contact with someone in the area.

In a statement, Vermont State Police mentioned that approximately two hours after the initial response, they located Hanafin south of Sugarbush Access Road off Route 100 in Vermont around 2:30 pm on Thursday afternoon without incident.

Hanafin is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in Barre Superior Court at 12:30 pm on Friday for a hearing on a charge of being a fugitive. He is expected to face additional charges in Massachusetts.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan stated that Reading Police received a call from Hanafin’s father, 48-year-old Matthew Hanafin, around 12:38 am on Thursday.

Matthew Hanafin informed the police that upon returning to their residence on Center Avenue, he discovered his wife, Andria, dead in the kitchen at the age of 49.

It was reported that the couple’s 13-year-old child was also present in the home at the time of Andria’s shooting.

Officials mentioned that there were no previous instances of police responding to calls from the family.

Hanafin was believed to be driving a black 2010 Dodge Charger with Massachusetts license plate 2PSY15. He is described as approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall (about 1.78 meters) with shoulder-length blonde hair, a beard, and glasses as shown in the only photo released by the police.

Prior to Hanafin’s arrest, Reading Police Chief David J. Clark advised the public to not approach him as he was considered armed and dangerous. In case of sighting his vehicle or him in person, people were urged to immediately contact 911, local law enforcement, or any relevant authorities.
