Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges’ Trading Volume Drops to a 14-Month Low at Only 1.41 Trillion Yuan

Around the time of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the A-share market has experienced consecutive declines. On September 29, the total turnover of the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets was only about 1.41 trillion yuan (RMB), a decrease of nearly 300 billion yuan from the previous trading day, reaching a new low in over 14 months as market trading activity noticeably decreased.

By the closing bell, the Shanghai Composite Index reported 3830.45 points, up 0.18%; the Shenzhen Component Index reported 13,252.09 points, up 0.34%; and the ChiNext Index reported 3244.15 points, up 0.09%. All three major indexes showed slight gains, but market turnover significantly contracted.

According to data from Financial News Agency, the total turnover of the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets on September 29 was 1.41 trillion yuan, a decrease of 293.6 billion yuan from the previous trading day, hitting a new low since July 8, 2025. Compared to the record daily turnover of 3.94 trillion yuan set on January 14 of this year, the latest turnover has decreased by over 64%.

Reuters reported that the turnover of the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets on that day fell to the lowest level since July 2025, indicating low market liquidity.

A-shares experienced noticeable volatility around the Mid-Autumn Festival (September 25).

On September 28, the Shanghai Composite Index fell by 1.67%, the Shenzhen Component Index fell by 3.44%, and the ChiNext Index fell by 4.53%. Additionally, the STAR 50 Index fell by 4.06%, the SSE 300 Index fell by 2.22%, the CSI 50 Index fell by 2.76%, the STAR Market Index fell by 4.31%, and the SME 500 Index fell by 2.79%.

On September 24, before the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Shanghai Composite Index dropped by 1.22% to 3888.37 points; the Shenzhen Component Index fell by 2.34% to 13316.97 points; the ChiNext Index fell by 2.68% to 3288.95 points, with the CSI 50 Index down by 1.7%; after a significant contraction of 370 billion yuan in market turnover on the 23rd, the turnover of the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets decreased by another 111.6 billion yuan.

It seems that the A-share market is experiencing significant turbulence in the lead-up to the Mid-Autumn Festival, with decreasing market activity and turnover marking recent trading sessions.
