The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the United States issued a statement on Wednesday, September 2nd, announcing that its subsidiary Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued a detention order for an illegal immigrant from Haiti. The man is accused of killing a woman in Florida and attempting to strangle another woman.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, the incident occurred in the early hours of August 27th in a duplex in Lehigh Acres. Upon receiving a domestic dispute call, law enforcement arrived at the scene and found a female body, identified as Amadette Longin.
The woman who called 911 said she woke up to find a man on top of her, choking her. She managed to break free and locked herself in the bathroom to call for help. The suspect, Whycliff Longin, was subsequently arrested. Family members revealed that the deceased was his aunt and the surviving victim was his cousin.
Longin faces multiple charges including murder, attempted murder, sexual assault, burglary with assault, and others. ICE issued a detention order to the Lee County Jail on the day of his arrest.
The DHS statement mentioned that Longin entered the U.S. illegally through Florida in 2024 and was later released to stay in the country.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated, “This dangerous illegal immigrant should never have been allowed to enter our country,” and vowed to work with local law enforcement in Florida to ensure he is not released back onto the streets.
