The US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier George Washington (CVN-73) has arrived in the Middle East to replace the Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier (CVN-72). On its way to the Middle East, the Washington Carrier also set a record of completing its 200,000th aircraft arrested landing.
Leaving Yokosuka, the immediate consequence of the Washington Carrier’s departure is that there is currently no US aircraft carrier battle group in the Western Pacific. The US Indo-Pacific Command’s jurisdiction – spanning a vast area from the US West Coast to the Indian Ocean – is experiencing a period without a supercarrier available. However, this period without carriers in the Western Pacific is not expected to last long. On one hand, the USS Tripoli amphibious assault ship returning to Japan can fulfill some of the carrier’s roles. On the other hand, the US has 1 to 2 carriers on the West Coast that can be deployed in the near future.
