On Wednesday morning, September 2, a shooting incident occurred at Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia. Police are currently investigating the incident.
Around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, police responded to the report and arrived at the scene promptly.
The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office stated that the situation is now under control, all students are safe, and they have been evacuated from the school.
Waynesboro Public Schools released a statement on social media saying, “All students, teachers, and staff at Westwood Hills Elementary School are safe.” The statement added that the school is arranging for students to reunite with their parents at a designated location.
“As a precautionary measure, all other schools in Waynesboro Public Schools are currently on lockdown. We will provide further updates if more information becomes available. All schools are secure at this time. Parents and guardians are advised not to call 911 for additional information. We will release relevant information as soon as possible,” the statement read.
Authorities urge the public to stay away from the area during the ongoing investigation.
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger posted on social media, thanking all the first responders who assisted in the rescue efforts at the scene. The governor also mentioned that law enforcement agencies and schools in Augusta County and Waynesboro are continuing to provide the community with the latest guidance and information.
According to sources cited by WJLA, one person was injured in the incident, but all students are reported to be safe.
