EU expresses support for US economic isolation of Iran

The European Union stated on Monday (August 31) that it will continue to work with the United States and other Group of Seven (G7) partners to exert pressure on Iran. The EU emphasized its support for the recent “Operation Economic Outcast” launched by the United States against Iran to compel Iran to engage in peace negotiations and cease its destructive activities.

In a statement issued on Monday regarding the Group of Twenty (G20) finance ministers and central bank governors meeting, the European Commission stated, “The EU has consistently urged Iran to restrain its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, cease destabilizing activities in the (Middle East) region and Europe, stop providing military support for Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and halt violence and repression against its own people.” The G20 meeting took place from August 31 to September 1 in Asheville, United States.

“The EU believes it is necessary to continue diplomatic efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution, restore regional stability, and ensure all vessels can enjoy full freedom of navigation and safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz,” the European Commission said in its statement, underscoring that the EU is prepared to take further sanction actions against Iran.

“The EU has already implemented extensive sanctions to prevent Iran from using the global economic and financial system to sustain its hostile actions and undermine international security. If necessary, the EU is still prepared to take additional measures to safeguard its security and interests, including ensuring freedom of navigation for vessels in the Strait of Hormuz,” the EU stated. “The EU welcomes efforts aimed at compelling Iran to cease destabilizing activities and engage in peace negotiations in good faith, and achieving this goal by applying further economic pressure, including the U.S.-led ‘Operation Economic Outcast.'”

The European Commission also mentioned that the EU will continue to closely collaborate with the United States, as well as other G7 members and international partners, to maintain pressure on Iran and contribute to easing tensions and upholding regional stability.

On August 24, U.S. Treasury Secretary Benson announced the initiation of “Operation Economic Outcast,” expanding secondary sanctions targeting Iran and its overseas facilitators in digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping sectors. This unprecedented action aims to sever every remaining economic lifeline supporting the Islamic Republic of Iran.
