On Saturday, August 1st, the 10th World Dog Surfing Championships took place at Pacifica State Beach in Northern California, USA. Dogs of various breeds, from small Spanish hunting dogs to large Labradors, gathered together to showcase their superior surfing skills in the waves, drawing a large crowd of spectators and creating a lively atmosphere.
According to various media reports, this unique annual event attracted many dog owners bringing their beloved pets to participate. The dogs were dressed in their own life jackets, accompanied by their owners as they stepped onto surfboards and glided through the waves. Some dogs even demonstrated remarkable balance and confidence by standing steadily on the board and riding the waves on their own.
The competition was divided into categories based on the dogs’ size and surfing styles. In addition to solo dog surfing, there were also tandem dog surfing and tandem human/dog surfing events. Judges evaluated the dogs based on factors such as the time they maintained balance on the board, wave size, tricks performed (such as turns, stances, etc.), as well as their level of confidence and enthusiasm.
In the end, a 5-year-old Labrador named Rippin Rosie from Santa Cruz, California, emerged victorious in the large/extra-large dog category, and together with her owner Steve Drottar, they also won the stand-up paddleboard surfing category.
The World Dog Surfing Championships not only provided a fun and exciting competition but also hosted animal adoption activities and fundraised for local animal charities. This one-of-a-kind surfing event once again showcased the strong bond between humans and their adorable canine companions, making it one of California’s most anticipated summer events.
