Former party secretary of Nanjing Audit University sentenced to 13 years for taking bribes over 22.8 million.

On Thursday (5th), the first trial of Wang Jiaxin, former secretary of the Party Committee of Nanjing Audit University, on charges of corruption and bribery was announced, with him being accused of taking bribes exceeding 22.8 million RMB (Chinese Yuan) and sentenced to 13 years in prison.

September 5th, the Intermediate People’s Court of Huai’an City, Jiangsu Province, publicly announced the verdict. Wang Jiaxin, former secretary of the Party Committee of Nanjing Audit University, was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison for corruption, with a fine of 200,000 RMB; 11 years and 6 months in prison for bribery, with a fine of 2.2 million RMB; a total of 13 years in prison to be served concurrently, with a fine of 2.4 million RMB.

The court stated that from 2005 to 2013, Wang Jiaxin took advantage of his position to instruct others to embezzle a total of over 900,000 RMB through false claims. From 2002 to 2017, Wang Jiaxin used his position to assist others in obtaining enrollment quotas, cooperative education projects, project contracting, job transfers, promotions, position adjustments, and coordinating audit matters. He received gifts from relevant individuals totaling over 22.8 million RMB.

The court also mentioned that considering Wang Jiaxin’s truthful confession of the crimes after surrendering all ill-gotten gains, pleading guilty and accepting punishment, a lighter sentence was warranted, leading to the aforementioned judgment.

Public records show that Wang Jiaxin was born in 1958, a native of Shanghai, and a second-class professor of economics. He graduated from Anhui Finance and Trade College (now Anhui University of Finance and Economics) and was recognized as a young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions at the ministerial level of the Chinese Communist Party and a recipient of special government allowances.
