Tragedy in Sichuan as Stall Owner Commits Suicide Amid 10-Yuan Dispute, Netizens Reflect on Hardship of Making a Living

Recently, a heartbreaking incident unfolded in Gaohsien, Yibin City, Sichuan Province, China, where a 33-year-old female street vendor, Ms. Hu, tragically ended her life by jumping into a river following a dispute over a 10 yuan (approximately $1.40) fried dish, which led to online harassment and negative reviews. Ms. Hu left behind two young children.

This incident quickly became a hot topic in mainland China, sparking widespread social concern. Netizens lamented that ordinary people, who toil for a living, often find themselves overwhelmed by sudden public opinion pressures – likening it to the “straw that broke the camel’s back.”

As reported by “Extreme News” on October 14, Ms. Hu and her husband had been selling fried skewers and potatoes from their stall for over four years. On October 6, a female customer purchased a 10 yuan self-selected fried dish, and a disagreement arose over the lack of additional potato strips. The customer then took to various social media platforms to post negative feedback, criticizing the service attitude and portion size of the food.

Ms. Hu’s husband explained that their stall offered over 20 different dishes for customers to choose from. If other ingredients were chosen more, the amount of potatoes would be reduced accordingly, and if the portion was too large, they would explain it to the customer. Ms. Hu had previously explained online that she had no qualms about the portions she provided.

However, after the related posts were made, the comment sections were flooded with negative reviews. In her final messages, Ms. Hu expressed that she felt the impact of online violence. Running a small stall was already tough, with her barely getting six hours of sleep a day, and she did not expect to receive a flood of criticisms in return.

According to several media reports, after Ms. Hu’s passing, public opinion quickly shifted, with many netizens starting to condemn the initial customer who posted the negative review. However, the customer responded, stating that they were only sharing their true consumption experience, did not fabricate facts or incite others, and should not be subject to trial by the entire internet. The customer’s related social media content is currently unavailable.

Local authorities in Gaohsien and the government stated that they are investigating the incident.

How did a dispute over a 10 yuan fried dish lead to such tragic consequences? The event once again highlights the harsh living conditions of China’s grassroots workers. Netizens commented, “Already facing great life pressures, being targeted by online harassment makes everything pitch black.” Another netizen said, “How important it is to have a kind heart. Why make life difficult for those who are desperate to survive?” There are also those who say, “In today’s society where ‘money’ rules, it seems that even morals have deteriorated to the point where not even dogs eat. Who is to blame for this?”

The incident has also garnered significant attention on overseas platforms, with one netizen commenting, “The hard-earned money of Chinese people has been taken away, making it increasingly difficult for people to survive, and the accumulated grievances lead to hysterical retaliation between each other… the root cause is the Communist Party.”

“In this pressure cooker, everyone is wielding a knife at the weaker ones. I don’t think it was the negative review that pushed this mother to her death; it was the hardships of life.”

“Beyond the online violence, the core issue lies in the immense pressure of survival. The economy within the walls is now bleak, with small businesses losing more than they earn. It might just be the final straw that broke the camel’s back.”
