In September 2026, a confidential report released by the IAEA confirmed the discovery of approximately 73 metric tons of natural uranium metal at a previously undisclosed secret location in Syria. This significant discovery came after the Syrian transitional government, following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime at the end of 2024, voluntarily reported the secret location to the IAEA on July 17, 2026, and invited international experts to investigate. The 73 tons of uranium metal are currently fully under containment and surveillance measures by the IAEA.
