Elon Musk Invests $500,000 to Support New York Republican Congressman LaMalfa’s Re-election

In order to assist the Republican Party in solidifying their control over the House of Representatives, the world’s richest person, Elon Musk, has poured over $500,000 to support the re-election campaign of incumbent Republican Congressman Mike Lawler in New York’s 17th Congressional District. With only two weeks left until the election day, this funding injection is expected to further escalate.

According to the latest information submitted to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) in the United States, Lawler is one of the biggest beneficiaries of Musk’s “Super Political Action Committee” (America PAC) in the House elections. In New York’s 17th district, where Lawler is seeking his third term, he faces a strong challenge from Democrat Cait Conley, a retired Army veteran who previously served as an anti-terrorism director at the National Security Council in the Biden administration.

Records show that Musk’s “Super Political Action Committee” funds have been mainly used for two purposes: running extensive online advertisements on platforms like Google, YouTube, and Facebook. One ad portrays Lawler as a warrior wearing boxing gloves, promoting his image of “cutting taxes, fighting high taxes, and cracking down on illegal immigrants”, while also accusing competitor Conley of being an “extremist” aligned with New York City Mayor Mamdani and Congresswoman AOC.

The majority of the funds have been allocated to on-the-ground visits and voter outreach in the district, precisely identifying Lawler’s supporters through text messages and ground teams, guiding them on how to register, make appointments, or go to the polls.

Two years ago, Musk’s “Super Political Action Committee” spent $1.7 million on Lawler’s campaign, and this year, the 17th district is the only congressional district in New York directly funded by Musk.

To date, major Super PACs have collectively spent over $16 million in the district, with both camps backed by substantial financial support.

The Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF), aimed at maintaining the majority of Republican seats in the House, has invested $6.5 million in the district (Musk had previously donated $10 million to the fund’s national fund pool).

Conley has received strong support from the Democratic camp’s House Majority PAC ($1.1 million) and the veteran political organization VoteVets ($1.3 million), in addition to funding from Planned Parenthood and teacher unions.

According to data from the political donation tracking organization Open Secrets, the 17th district of New York became the third most expensive House district in the United States during the last election cycle with nearly $45 million in total spending.

This year, total spending from both party camps and external groups in the 17th district has exceeded the $30 million mark. As the election countdown begins, the high-stakes financial battle and confrontation in this nationally watched “swing district” will further intensify.

The 17th district of New York covers areas primarily including Rockland County, Putnam County, Northern Westchester County, and Southern Dutchess County.
