Two men from Brooklyn, 34-year-old Wei Baoguo and 38-year-old Yu Sheng Gui, were arrested by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) of the New York State Police in Monroe Town on Monday (August 4th) for allegedly defrauding a 27-year-old resident of Orange County, New York, of $15,000. They have been charged with a class D felony for grand larceny.
According to the New York State Police, the two suspects posed as FBI agents and contacted the victim, threatening arrest if $15,000 was not paid. Frightened, the victim agreed to meet with them and hand over the money. Shortly after the transaction was completed, Wei Baoguo and Yu Sheng Gui were located and arrested by law enforcement officers.
The two suspects appeared in court for the first time on August 5th at the Newburgh City Court and were both released on bail. They are scheduled to appear in the Blooming Grove Town Court on the morning of September 4th. The police have stated that the case is still under investigation.
The New York State Police have noted that similar fraud cases have recently occurred in other areas of Orange County. There is currently no evidence to suggest a clear connection between these cases, but further investigation may reveal a broader network of fraud.
