In Jiamusi, Heilongjiang Province, a black bear appeared in a village on June 5, chasing passing vehicles and anglers. Villagers were advised not to go out unless necessary. The news quickly became a hot topic on June 7.
According to reports from various media outlets such as China.com, a black bear appeared in Shengdeku Village in Jiamusi, Heilongjiang Province on the morning of the 5th. This bear not only chased after passing vehicles but also pursued local anglers.
The villagers previously attempted to scare off the black bear with firecrackers, but it remained unfazed. The police then deployed dozens of stun grenades and tear gas, yet the bear still stayed in the forest unwilling to leave. Villagers were advised to stay indoors unless necessary, and farmers working in the fields were also brought back by vehicles.
Mr. Li, a villager, stated that the bear has now left as it couldn’t find food, and no injuries were reported. Mr. Li speculated that the bear may have swam over from Russia.
On June 6, the Yangcheng Evening News reminded the public that black bears generally do not actively harm people unless they feel threatened or believe their food is being taken away. Alternatively, if they have been previously harmed by humans, such as being hit by stones, sticks, or shot, black bears may retaliate in revenge.
The Yangcheng Evening News advised that if encountering a bear without any tools in hand, the first rule is not to run. Firstly, you cannot outrun it, and running may trigger its attack instincts as only prey would run.
Secondly, if it is far away from you, at least around 100 meters, act like nothing is happening, find a path to avoid the bear, and retreat slowly. If the bear is around 50 meters away, avoid eye contact and then move backward.
Furthermore, if the bear shows signs of charging towards you, consider playing dead. Do not scream, as screaming is a major reason for attacks to the face and neck. Bears want you to calm down, but pretending to be dead may not guarantee one hundred percent effectiveness.
