Earthquakes occurred in Urumqi, Xinjiang and Ya’an, Sichuan consecutively.

On the evening of September 30th, a 3.2-magnitude earthquake struck the Shayibake District of Urumqi, Xinjiang. An hour and a half later, another earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 hit the Lushan County in Ya’an, Sichuan. Residents in both regions reported feeling strong tremors.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, at 7:20 p.m. on September 30, 2025, the earthquake in the Shayibake District of Urumqi had a magnitude of 3.2, with a depth of 29 kilometers, indicating a shallow source earthquake.

Some residents in urban areas reported noticeable shaking, especially in high-rise buildings. People mentioned that their furniture rattled, sofas moved, and some even felt like they were lifted off the ground, despite the moderate magnitude of 3.2.

Later, at 8:57 p.m., a 3.4-magnitude earthquake occurred in Lushan County, Ya’an, Sichuan, with a depth of 11 kilometers. Residents in the surrounding areas expressed strong tremors, describing the shaking as intense and questioning the reported magnitude of 3.2 due to the severity of the tremors.

Residents from various districts shared their experiences, with sentiments like “Lushan shook really violently,” “It can’t be just 3.2, the shaking was so intense,” “Strong tremors felt in Xindian,” “Obvious tremors in Ya’an Shangli,” “First floor in Yucheng District felt it clearly,” “Yucheng District shook, the projector during class was swinging,” “Leshan sofa shook a couple of times,” “More than 3.2, the tremors were strong,” “On the 21st floor, the up-and-down shaking was terrifying,” “Dongxing District in Neijiang felt it,” “Leshan residents also felt it,” “Hongya had the feeling.”
