At the age of 50, former Miss Hong Kong second runner-up Wu Yanxi (formerly known as Wu Wenxi), who is battling stage IV breast cancer that has spread to her tailbone, revealed that her cancer markers are now back to normal levels. However, amidst her fight against cancer, she shocked the public by announcing her divorce from her husband Chen Jianling, ending their 14-year marriage.
Recently, Wu Yanxi recorded a new song titled “Rebirth” and is set to release her autobiography “Reborn for Love” during the Hong Kong Book Fair next month. Despite actively fighting cancer, she surprised many with her divorce from the financial talent Chen Jianling, who is known as the “Prince of Lamma Island”.
On the evening of the 28th, Wu Yanxi posted on IG: “Marriage taught me to let go and give thanks. Even though this journey did not have a fairytale ending, it remains an important scene in my life, allowing me to understand self-love and love for those around me. I hope to share with you through my story: no matter how winding your path is, love is your strongest wing, it will carry you through any storm, towards your own starry sky. Facing, letting go, love, and gratitude can turn your crisis (cancer) into an opportunity, leading you to your own rebirth.”
Expressing her attitude towards divorce, Wu Yanxi stated: “There is no right or wrong, I hope everyone does not need to speculate unnecessarily. Sometimes, being friends is better than being spouses, so let’s gracefully return to being friends!”
Wu Yanxi, who graduated from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in the United States, won the third place in the Miss Hong Kong pageant in 1998, leading her to enter the entertainment industry where she acted in films and hosted TV shows. At the age of 50, she married financial talent Chen Jianling in 2011, and they have two daughters aged 10 and 8. Last year, during a charity fashion show where Wu Yanxi and her daughters were modeling, Chen Jianling was also present to show his support.
After publicly revealing her breast cancer diagnosis three years ago in August, Wu Yanxi recently shared updates on her cancer battle. Despite the cancer recurrence and deterioration to stage IV, after several months of vigorous treatment, reports indicated that her cancer markers CEA and CA15 have shown signs of declining to normal levels.
However, Wu Yanxi explained that even though her cancer markers have returned to normal levels, which doesn’t necessarily mean the cancer has been eradicated, it at least indicates that the current combination of traditional chemotherapy and adjuvant therapy has significantly suppressed cancer cell growth. Her doctors have now approved reducing her weekly check-ups to once every three weeks.
According to Hong Kong media reports, Wu Yanxi mentioned in an interview that issues in her marriage had surfaced before her cancer diagnosis. She stated that she and Chen Jianling had a tumultuous relationship since their dating days, and now both have made decisions, transitioning into a friendship at the present moment.
