On Saturday afternoon, during a soccer game at a sports center in Wichita, Kansas, a car suddenly crashed onto the field, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and multiple injuries.
According to the Wichita Police Department’s announcement on Saturday on its official website, the incident occurred around 3:25 p.m. local time at the Stryker Sports Complex where a soccer game was taking place. The car unexpectedly drove onto the field, causing the immediate deaths of an adult and a child, along with several people sustaining injuries.
As of the time of reporting, the police have not released the identities or ages of the deceased individuals, nor have they disclosed the exact number of injuries.
CNN reported that Aaron Moses, a supervisor at the Wichita Police Department, revealed that there were two minors in the vehicle involved, who have been detained.
Moses emphasized that the vehicle remains at the scene and the driver responsible for the incident “will no longer pose a continuing additional threat to the public.”
Law enforcement officials are currently working to contact the families of the victims to deliver the tragic news.
An eyewitness at the scene recalled that they were watching the soccer game with their family when a black pickup truck suddenly crossed over the curb and rammed into the field.
Several witnesses noted that the field was surrounded by fences with only one concrete pathway leading to the parking lot. Many families and children were present at the time of the incident.
Two other witnesses mentioned hearing a loud noise at the time of the crash. Following the event, a large number of law enforcement officers rushed to the scene.
Moses stated that it is still unclear how the car managed to breach the gates, and the exact speed of the vehicle at the time remains unknown.
The Kansas State High School Activities Association announced on Saturday in a statement that the state football championship games have been temporarily suspended as law enforcement investigates the adjacent Stryker Sports Complex field.
The Wichita city government also issued a statement confirming the cancellation of all activities at the sports center until further notice.
Moses mentioned that the police are planning to hold another press conference later on Saturday to provide more information.
