Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen expressed gratitude today to allies and democratic partners for speaking up for Taiwan during the United Nations General Assembly. Facing increasingly severe challenges from authoritarian expansion, Tsai emphasized that “Taiwan will not retreat, and certainly will not be alone,” vowing to stand together with democratic partners.
According to Reuters, Paraguay’s President Santiago Pena reiterated his country’s support for Taiwan during his speech at the United Nations. He stated, “Today, I reiterate my support for the Republic of China (Taiwan) to participate fully and meaningfully in the United Nations and its specialized agencies. Taiwan can make concrete contributions to peace, development, and human rights.”
President Tsai took to Facebook today to express his gratitude to the leaders of Paraguay, Palau, and Eswatini for voicing support for Taiwan during the UN General Assembly. Taiwan not only plays a crucial role in the global supply chain and sustainable development but also holds significant importance for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, which is vital for global economy and prosperity. Taiwan has the capability and should further engage meaningfully in international affairs to contribute more to the global community.
Tsai mentioned that the European Union, as well as like-minded democratic partners such as Australia, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Poland, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait through a joint statement. They encouraged dialogue to resolve differences and firmly opposed any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.
These voices, Tsai emphasized, send a resoundingly clear message that “the expansion of authoritarianism is a global threat, and the unity of democratic nations is the only answer to safeguard peace and prosperity.”
“As a critical link in the global democratic and supply chain, Taiwan is keenly aware of its responsibilities. Faced with increasingly severe challenges from authoritarian expansion, Taiwan will not back down, nor will it stand alone. Taiwan is not only the frontline defender of freedom and democracy but also a mature, responsible, and trustworthy force for good in the international community,” Tsai stated.
Tsai reiterated that Taiwan will continue to confidently engage with the world, closely standing with all democratic partners to uphold peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, preserve the rules-based international order, and make more contributions to global sustainable development.
