Jiangxi Provincial Governor’s Family Involved in Rare Earth Business, Wife Arrested

Jiangxi Provincial Governor Ye Jianchun was taken down from his position yesterday (August 27) due to allegations of involvement in rare earth business by his family, his wife has also been arrested. Following Ye Jianchun’s downfall, details of his corruption have been circulating on the internet.

On August 27, the official Communist Party of China (CPC) announcement stated that Ye Jianchun, the Deputy Secretary of the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee and the Governor, was “suspected of serious violations of discipline and law” and is currently under investigation. Even a day earlier, overseas networks were already spreading news of Ye Jianchun being investigated and having his home searched.

According to a report by the Chinese media outlet Economic Observer on August 28, sources revealed that on August 25, Ye Jianchun arrived in Ruijin City, Jiangxi, where he was supposed to attend a meeting on August 26. It was planned that on the morning of August 26, he would participate in a breakfast meeting and deliver a speech. However, on the evening of August 25, Ye Jianchun was taken away by the discipline inspection and supervisory commission officials.

Officials in Jiangxi said that since Ye Jianchun took office in Jiangxi, his family has been involved in rare earth business in the province, raising eyebrows in political and business circles in Jiangxi. It is reported that both before and after Ye Jianchun’s downfall, his wife was also taken away by the discipline inspection and supervisory commission officials.

Jiangxi is one of the provinces in China with the largest reserves of rare earth minerals. A report by China Mining News on January 2, 2025, stated that Jiangxi’s heavy rare earth mines account for about two-thirds of the national total.

The Jiangxi Daily reported that on the night of August 27, the standing committee of the CPC Jiangxi Provincial Committee held an enlarged meeting to express support for the investigation and handling of Ye Jianchun. This meeting mentioned “resolutely eliminating ‘nepotism corruption’, ‘family-style corruption'”.

After the official announcement of Ye Jianchun’s investigation, rumors started circulating on the internet about the details of his home search: over 200 suitcases containing 320 million yuan in cash were found.

On August 28, various active X accounts such as Finding and New Highlands reposted revelations claiming that after Beijing CPPCC Chairman Wei Xiaodong was taken down, Ye Jianchun in faraway Jiangxi became unsettled. It was reportedly Wei Xiaodong who personally intervened earlier, through the relationship of Xi Jinping’s confidant Cai Qi, to secure Ye Jianchun the position of Jiangxi Governor. It is said that at 13:45 on August 25, the Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, Director of the National Supervisory Commission Liu Jinguo, dispatched the Deputy Secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and Secretary-General Li Xinran to take direct compulsory measures against Ye Jianchun, bypassing the Jiangxi Provincial Committee, Provincial Government, and Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection.

At 10:30 on August 26, investigators conducted a carpet search of the compound provided to Ye Jianchun by the Jiangxi Provincial Institution Affairs Management Bureau (a two-and-a-half-story independent villa). At the same time, the task force also conducted surprise searches of the independent residences of several of his secretaries. The search operation lasted for a full three hours. It is said that inside this secretive “treasury” were over 200 large suitcases, each containing 1.6 million yuan packed in vacuum-sealed bags.

However, these revelations cannot be confirmed at the moment. In the past, the amounts of corruption officially announced by the CPC in cases of fallen officials are often in the range of billions yuan, and there have been doubts about whether these figures were “deflated”.

Public records show that 61-year-old Ye Jianchun, originally from Zhaoning, Fujian, previously held positions such as Deputy Director, Director, and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee at the Shanghai Survey Design Research Institute. He served as the Director of the Taihu River Basin Authority of the Ministry of Water Resources, Chief of the Finance Department of the Ministry of Water Resources, Deputy Minister of Water Resources, and concurrently Deputy Minister of Emergency Management from June 2005. Ye Jianchun served as Deputy Secretary of the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee, Deputy Governor, and Governor starting from February 2021. Currently, he is a member of the 20th Central Committee of the CPC.

Following Ye Jianchun’s downfall, Taiwan’s United Daily News reported that sources described Ye Jianchun as being associated with the “Shanghai clique” and having ties to Zeng Qinghong in Jiangxi.

Former Inner Mongolia official Du Wen posted on X platform that day, stating that Ye Jianchun was one of the “5000 Zeng Family Army” led by Zeng Qinghong.

Several overseas media outlets have been paying attention to the recent turmoil in the Jiangxi political scene, which may implicate the Ye Jianchun case.

Ye Jianchun’s predecessor as Jiangxi Governor, Yi Lianhong, was taken down from his position as Deputy Director of the National People’s Congress Finance and Economic Committee on February 10 this year.

On May 27, a high-ranking CPC official, Jiangxi Provincial Committee Standing Committee member and Minister of the United Front Work Department Li Wei was taken down from his post.

During Ye Jianchun’s tenure as Jiangxi Governor, Xu Yanbin, who served as the Secretary General of the Jiangxi Provincial Government from March 2023 to September 2025, was investigated in March this year. Official reports stated that Xu Yanbin voluntarily confessed to his problems.

At the end of July, the Mayor of Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi Province, Gao Shiwen, resigned and was removed from the Jiangxi Provincial People’s Congress membership. Gao Shiwen was a long-time secretary to CPC Political Bureau member Ma Xingrui, who was formally investigated in April this year.

According to Caixin, since the 19th CPC National Congress, Jiangxi has had the highest number of fallen high-ranking officials with 10, among all provinces during the same period.
