NATO leaders urge China to stop supporting Russian war in Ukraine.

On September 6, 2024, Reuters reported that NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called on China to stop supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine, stating that Beijing’s assistance is a key factor in prolonging the conflict.

Stoltenberg made the remarks in Oslo, the capital of Norway, where he told reporters, “China has become a decisive driver of Russia’s war against Ukraine.” He added, “China produces many of the weapons used by Russia.”

He warned that continuing to fuel the conflict in Ukraine could have negative consequences for China’s interests and reputation.

“I urge China to stop supporting Russia’s illegal war,” Stoltenberg said.

China has previously described similar statements from NATO as “malicious” and biased.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had previously stated in July that he did not want China, which has an “infinite” partnership with Russia, to mediate talks between the two countries. However, he hoped that Beijing could exert greater pressure on Moscow to end the war.
