“Subway Shooting Incident: Ke Yu Jie Advocates Setting Up Special Task Force to Combat Crime”

October 19, 2026, Manhattan, New York – A shooting incident occurred in broad daylight at the Midtown Manhattan subway station on the 17th, resulting in the death of a man who was shot. Saritha Komatireddy, a Republican candidate for the New York State Attorney General, held a press conference outside the crime scene on the 18th morning, criticizing the subway system as a gathering place for violent criminals, individuals with severe mental illnesses, drug addicts, and the homeless. She promised that if elected, she would establish a Public Transportation Crime Task Force within the State Attorney General’s Office to enhance efforts against habitual offenders and illegal gun crimes.

Police reported that the shooting took place around 12:20 p.m. on the 17th at the subway station located at the intersection of Seventh Avenue and West 53rd Street in Manhattan. Two men got into a dispute on the platform, which escalated to a train pulling into the station, then returned to the platform where one man was shot in the chest. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect fled on foot northwards along Seventh Avenue after the shooting. According to the surveillance footage released by the police, the suspect was dressed in a red athletic suit, black vest, wearing a black mask, and carrying a backpack. The police are investigating whether the two parties knew each other and the cause of the conflict. As of the afternoon of the 18th, no arrests had been announced, and the victim’s name and age had not been disclosed. The police urge anyone with information to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-577-8477.

Komatireddy pointed out that the crime scene is situated in a bustling commercial and tourist area in Manhattan, near Central Park and Broadway theaters, yet a fatal act of violence occurred during the day, causing psychological impact on families, commuters, and tourists who rely on the subway daily.

If elected, she plans to establish a dedicated task force to combat public transportation crimes and work in collaboration with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and local law enforcement agencies to ensure the enforcement of relevant laws and prevent repeat offenders from committing crimes within the subway and bus systems.

She also shared her personal experiences, mentioning instances where her family had encountered violence while taking the subway to school with her children. She herself has faced emotionally disturbed individuals yelling at passengers or making threats while traveling to Central Park and museums. She believes that besides strengthening law enforcement, individuals with mental illnesses should receive appropriate treatment.

Regarding illegal gun issues, Komatireddy cited her experience as a former federal prosecutor, stating that she had prosecuted dozens of cases involving illegal firearms, emphasizing the need for strict enforcement of relevant laws.

In addition to the shooting incident, a separate incident occurred at the Sheep’s Head Bay subway station in Brooklyn on the same day, where a 68-year-old woman was injured in a dispute with a man, resulting in cuts to her face. The police are investigating the incident.
