New York City is expected to see an increase in natural gas costs in some areas this winter. The energy supplier, National Grid, recently announced its predictions that typical residential users in the New York City service area can expect their natural gas bills for the five winter months to reach $1,765, an increase of $87 compared to the same period last year, representing a 5.2% rise. Despite a decrease in the cost of natural gas supply, the increase in distribution fees is expected to drive up household energy expenses.
According to the forecast, during the winter heating period from November 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027, based on a natural gas usage of 720 therms, the supply cost for residential users in New York City is projected to decrease by $124 compared to last year. However, an increase of $211 in distribution fees will offset the savings from the decline in supply costs.
By contrast, residential users in the Long Island and Queens Rockaway areas can expect their natural gas bills this winter to be $1,461, an increase of only $5 from last year. Of this amount, the supply cost is expected to decrease by $120, while distribution fees will increase by $125.
National Grid stated that the natural gas supply fee reflects wholesale market procurement costs, with no additional markup by the company, while distribution fees are used for natural gas network maintenance, equipment repairs, and system upgrades. The increase in distribution fees is related to the rate adjustments approved by the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) in 2024.
The aforementioned forecast is based on market data as of the end of September and normal winter temperatures. Actual bills will still depend on weather conditions, natural gas prices, and household usage. If winter temperatures are lower than usual, leading to an increase in heating demand, costs could rise further.
In an effort to ease the burden on residents, National Grid stated that the current rate plans offer over $290 million in bill discounts. In 2025, the company provided a total of $1.4 million in subsidies to over 3,100 users through the Energy Assistance Program.
The New York State Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) will open for applications on November 2, providing eligible households with winter heating assistance. Residents of New York City can apply through the city government’s website (nyc.gov/accesshra). Additionally, the Energy Affordability Program (EAP) and Enhanced Energy Affordability Program (EEAP) offer monthly bill discounts to qualifying families.
National Grid advises residents to moderately lower heating temperatures, improve home insulation, and seal door and window gaps. It is estimated that for every 1-degree Fahrenheit reduction in temperature, heating costs can be reduced by 1% to 3% annually. Using a smart thermostat can lead to savings of around 10% on heating and cooling costs per year.
For families experiencing difficulties in paying their bills, National Grid offers installment payment plans and budget payment plans that spread the costs evenly throughout the year, alleviating the burden of winter bills. Residents can call 1-800-642-4272 for inquiries about available discounts.
