Northern California Providence Alumni Association celebrates its 40th anniversary at the end of this month.

The Northern California Providence University Alumni Association will hold its 40th anniversary annual meeting and fundraising dinner on Sunday, March 30th at 5 pm at the Crowne Plaza Foster City – San Mateo. The event, themed “40 Years of Brilliance, Standing Strong with the Heart of Providence University, Sparkling Like a Diamond for 40 Years,” is expected to welcome 200 distinguished guests. Teachers, alumni, and friends are invited to gather together to witness this grand occasion.

President of the Alumni Association, Huang Anli, expressed that since the establishment of the alumni association by Kim Haini in 1985, with the efforts of 17 presidents and teams, and the support of a vast number of alumni and teachers, the Northern California Alumni Association has journeyed through forty years. Reflecting on this history, she remarked that it has been a fortunate and precious journey, and she hopes that the Alumni Association will shine like a diamond in the future, moving towards a more brilliant next forty years.

Notably, this year’s annual meeting has received high attention and support from the alma mater. President Lin Siling will lead four teachers to visit from Taiwan to attend the event and celebrate the 40th anniversary with the alumni.

Huang Anli mentioned that to ensure the successful completion of the event, preparations by the team began six months in advance. The evening will feature a variety of exciting programs, including performances of traditional Chinese zither and dance, a storytelling session by renowned author Lawyer Qiu Zhang, titled “Real People, Real Stories, Real Talk.” Additionally, special guest Southern California folk singer Prince Jiang Wenshan and the Everlasting Love Band will present a mini “Bay Area Folk Songs 50,” leading everyone to revisit the moving melodies of classic folk songs.

As a token of appreciation for guests’ support, each participant will receive a Van Gogh painting shopping bag as a souvenir. There will also be on-site raffle draws during the dinner, offering numerous exquisite prizes to enhance the festive atmosphere of the event.

Since its establishment in 1985, the Northern California Providence University Alumni Association has actively participated in patriotic and public welfare activities within the overseas Chinese community, holding diverse alumni fellowship activities every year to strengthen alumni friendships.

The founder of Providence University, Sister Marie Gratia Luking, is an American religious sister of the Providence Sisters. In 1932, she founded Providence Girls’ School in Kaifeng, Henan, China, dedicated to promoting female education. In 1948, she arrived in Taiwan and actively engaged in school reconstruction work; the following year, she established the “Catholic English School” on Liyuan Road in Taichung City; and in 1953, she built a new school building on Xingxing Road in Taichung City.

As the school’s scale gradually expanded, in 1956, it was officially registered as “Providence Girls’ English Specialized School”; in 1963, it was upgraded to “Providence Girls’ College of Arts and Sciences.”

To meet the growing demands, the school relocated to Shalu in 1987; in 1989, it was officially restructured as “Providence Girls’ University”; and in 1993, it was renamed “Providence University,” starting to admit male students.

Today, Providence University has evolved into a comprehensive university that is inclusive, excellent, and continuously developing.
