On Thursday morning at 9:30 AM Eastern Time, the United States House of Representatives held the final hearing of the “Security Investigation of the Assassination Attempt on Trump” task force. The investigation by the task force focused on security vulnerabilities surrounding the two attempted assassinations of President-elect Donald Trump. Acting Director Ronald Low will testify, and a working group composed of seven Republicans and six Democrats is preparing to release the final report of the investigation.
In his prepared testimony, Low stated: “We must recognize the severity of our failure on July 13, 2024. Personally, I am deeply aware that we almost lost a protectee, and our failure cost a father and husband his life. The entire incident represents the Secret Service’s failure to fulfill its expectations and responsibilities.”
During this year’s presidential election campaign, Trump narrowly escaped two assassination attempts, raising questions about the level of personnel deployment and communication capabilities of the Secret Service.
In July this year, during a Trump campaign rally in Pennsylvania, a gunman fired eight shots, injuring Trump’s ear and killing another participant. The gunman was later shot and killed by a Secret Service counter-sniper.
Two months later, an armed man hid near a golf course owned by Trump in Florida. Prosecutors allege that the man intended to kill Trump, who was the Republican candidate at the time, while he was playing golf. The suspect, Ryan Routh, pleaded not guilty to federal charges and is awaiting trial.
Low took over as Acting Director after his predecessor resigned following the Pennsylvania shooting incident. He vowed to hold accountable the agents responsible for security failures and stated during the campaign that Trump’s protection would be on par with that of the current President, Joe Biden.
