A 29-year-old Chinese woman was recently kidnapped by four Thai men while traveling in Thailand, at a hotel in Bangkok. Fortunately, she managed to escape by jumping out of the moving vehicle as she was being taken towards the Thailand-Myanmar border. Following the incident, all four suspects were subsequently apprehended. Thai police have assessed the case as having characteristics of human trafficking and are currently investigating the masterminds behind the scenes and the transnational criminal network involved.
According to reports from “Red Star News” and Thai media, the Chinese woman had originally planned to pursue a master’s degree in Singapore. Before departing, she had met someone online claiming to be a Chinese “friend” in Singapore who advised her to visit Thailand for a few days on the way, promising to arrange transportation.
On August 23, upon arriving in Thailand, the woman checked into a hotel in Bangkok as agreed. Shortly after, a private car arrived to pick her up. Thinking it was a tour guide, she soon realized something was amiss and requested to get off the car. However, she was violently restrained by three men, her hands bound, her face covered with cloth, and her mouth injured from being hit.
Subsequently, as the car traveled north, when it reached a police checkpoint in Kamphaeng Phet Province, the woman shouted for help. The driver attempted to speed through the checkpoint but had the car’s tires shot through by Thai police. In the chaos, the woman jumped out of the vehicle to escape, while the four suspects abandoned the car to flee. Two were caught on the spot, while the other two were apprehended on the 24th.
According to the driver’s confession, he was hired by another suspect for 10,000 Thai baht to pick up someone in Bangkok and take them to Mae Sot.
Thai authorities have emphasized that this case displays clear signs of human trafficking, with the criminal group having distinct roles from establishing trust online, arranging transportation, to midway escorting. It is suspected that they intended to transport the victim from Tak Province in Mae Sot County to Myanmar to be sold into a local scam call center.
Currently, the police are using recovered data from the phones involved in the case to track down the masterminds and the cross-border network behind the operation.
