In response to the recent intensified law enforcement actions by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in New York City, Queens reported another suspected ICE vehicle stop enforcement incident on August 1. Citizens captured footage showing multiple ICE enforcement officers wearing tactical vests stopping vehicles near the Long Island Expressway (I-495) close to the Costco in Queens.
According to on-site photos, the incident took place near the Costco in the Rego Park neighborhood, adjacent to the intersection of the I-495 expressway, with law enforcement officers wearing ICE uniforms, masks, and bulletproof vests intercepting vehicles for inspection.
ICE has been stepping up its enforcement efforts in New York City recently. According to a report by AmNY on July 31, ICE agents were heavily present in all five boroughs of New York City and Long Island on July 30 and 31, resulting in a significant increase in reported sightings. Videos rapidly circulated on social media showing ICE agents in bulletproof gear and masks patrolling the streets of New York.
Sources have indicated that ICE activities have increased in communities like Inwood and College Point, which previously had few reported similar actions. They also noted an apparent rise in the number of vehicle interceptions by law enforcement officers.
The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) issued a warning, cautioning that immigration enforcement activities will escalate, stating: “We expect this trend to continue and potentially worsen.”
Following a Supreme Court ruling allowing the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians, effective July 25, Haitians previously holding TPS no longer have work authorization. Without other legal status, they may become targets for ICE enforcement and face deportation.
Border chief Tom Homan announced on June 8 this year the deployment of additional ICE personnel to New York, stating that the city would see “more ICE agents than ever before.”
Homan also urged the public to remain calm when encountering ICE enforcement actions and not to obstruct or resist law enforcement officers.
Immigrant rights organizations advise individuals facing ICE enforcement actions to stay calm, not to flee or engage in physical confrontation with law enforcement officers, not to provide false information or fraudulent documents, to exercise the right to remain silent and request legal counsel, and not to sign documents without fully understanding their content.
