According to a report from Fox News on Thursday, July 23, the House Ways and Means Committee in the United States has issued subpoenas to three left-wing non-profit organizations to investigate the insider donations of over $39 million from tech entrepreneur Neville Roy Singham, who has close ties to the Chinese Communist Party.
The investigation is focused on whether Singham is involved in money laundering or other financial crimes, including transferring funds from China to left-wing non-profit organizations in the United States and internationally.
In the letters dated July 21 obtained by Fox, the committee accused the three non-profit organizations of not providing “any relevant documents” in response to previous requests for information, leading to the initiation of enforcement procedures.
The committee is chaired by Republican Congressman Jason Smith of Missouri. It had previously issued subpoenas to three left-wing non-profit organizations – The People’s Forum, BreakThrough News (BT News), and Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research – demanding submission of all relevant financial records, contracts, communications, and foreign funding sources by August 7.
The committee stated that it is investigating whether current tax laws are sufficient to prevent foreign influence on tax-exempt organizations and evaluating whether Congress needs to amend these laws.
According to Fox News’ investigation, Singham transferred a significant amount of funds to left-wing organizations in the United States, including approximately $22.44 million to The People’s Forum, around $16.76 million to Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, and approximately $1.098 million to Breakthrough News’ parent company Breakthrough BT Media Inc.
In a five-part investigative report published by Fox News in March, it was revealed that since 2017, Singham had funneled $278 million through the Goldman Sachs Donor-Advised Philanthropy Fund and two now-dissolved shell companies into six U.S. non-profit organizations, three of which are currently facing congressional subpoenas.
These funds were ultimately used to support various radical activities, including anti-Israel protests, pro-Cuba propaganda, anti-immigration law enforcement, and particularly pro-communist propaganda.
The lawyers of the three organizations subpoenaed had previously refused to comply citing reasons such as “lack of legislative purpose,” “violation of First Amendment rights,” and “freedom of the press.” However, the congressional committee made it clear that the investigation is focused on financial arrangements and transparency of foreign funding, not the organizations’ political positions.
Congressman Smith told Fox News that these subpoenas will help expose whether U.S. tax laws and the charity sector have been “exploited to advance the Chinese Communist Party’s influence within the United States.”
“The American people have the right to know whether the CCP has used the U.S. tax-exempt sector to advance its agenda,” Smith said, adding that while the committee uncovers criminal networks, it will push for legislation to close these loopholes.
At the end of June, Fox News cited U.S. officials saying that the Department of Justice had launched a grand jury investigation into Singham, focusing on whether he is involved in money laundering or other financial crimes, including transferring funds from China to left-wing non-profit organizations in the U.S. and internationally.
