Former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the Communist Party of China, Tang Renjian, Arrested.

On December 10, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate of China announced that Tang Renjian, the former Party Secretary and Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, was arrested on suspicion of bribery.

Tang Renjian, 62 years old, has been working in the agricultural sector for a long time. He has held various positions, including Deputy Director of the Central Finance and Economics Leading Group Office, Deputy Director of the Central Rural Work Leading Group Office, and Vice Chairman of the State Council Leading Group for Poverty Alleviation and Development.

In 2014, Tang Renjian was appointed as the Vice Chairman and Executive Vice Chairman of the Guangxi government. In June 2016, he was transferred to the position of Deputy Director and Director of the Office of the Central Rural Work Leading Group, as well as Deputy Director of the Central Finance Office. In 2017, he became the Deputy Secretary of the Gansu Provincial Party Committee and the Governor. In December 2020, he assumed the position of Director of the Office of the Central Rural Work Leading Group, Party Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and Minister.

Tang Renjian is also a delegate to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and a member of the 20th Central Committee.

On May 18 of this year, Tang Renjian was announced to have fallen from power during his tenure, and on November 15, he was placed under investigation and had his qualifications as a delegate to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China revoked.

Tang Renjian has been accused of failing to effectively implement the central policy decisions on agriculture, rural areas, and farmers; unlawfully accepting gifts and money, as well as participating in numerous banquets and travel arrangements; seeking personal gain for others in the selection and appointment of cadres and accepting bribes; using his power to assist relatives in business activities, turning a blind eye to his staff’s exploitation of his authority for personal gain; illegally intervening in and interfering with judicial activities; using his position to benefit others in business operations, project contracting, job adjustments, and receiving large amounts of illegal money.
