Recently, on a flight from Lanzhou to Guiyang operated by Eastern Airlines, a passenger overhead luggage compartment caught fire while the plane was taxiing on the runway upon landing at the airport. Fortunately, the fire was promptly extinguished, and there were no casualties.
According to the report by the Ningbo Evening News, the incident occurred around 11 a.m. on July 24th when a flight from Lanzhou to Guiyang landed at Guiyang Longdongbao Airport, and a fire suddenly broke out in the cabin.
A video circulating online shows flames visible inside the overhead luggage compartment, with several crew members on the scene handling the situation.
One passenger recalled in a post that on the day of the incident, as their plane had just landed, they suddenly heard a passenger in front shouting, “Fire!” and “I thought the exterior of the plane was on fire, but when I looked up, flames were coming out of the luggage rack.”
In response to this, the Guiyang Longdongbao Airport Fire Department told Jímù News that when the firefighters arrived, the fire had already been extinguished by the crew members. After a preliminary investigation, it was found that the fire was caused by a passenger’s power bank self-igniting, and no injuries were reported.
In recent years, incidents of power banks self-igniting have been occurring frequently in mainland China.
On January 5, 2026, at Shanghai West Station platform, a power bank carried by a passenger self-ignited, burning through the pocket of the passenger’s jacket and causing severe damage to the clothing.
On December 24, 2025, on Guangzhou Metro Line 1 when a passenger’s power bank self-ignited, igniting the passenger’s clothes inside the carriage. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
On October 20, 2024, after the CA2821 flight from Tianjin to Shanghai arrived at Hongqiao Airport, a passenger’s power bank inside their backpack suddenly self-ignited as they were passing through the boarding bridge, causing a fire in the backpack. The open flame was extinguished within minutes, and no injuries were reported.
