Newborn dies after two chest surgeries at the Second Hospital of Xiangya

Recently, a 22-day-old baby girl named Xiaonuan from Hunan passed away after undergoing two open-heart surgeries at the Second Xiangya Hospital. The family questioned surgical errors and demanded the truth through online advocacy.

According to mainland media reports, Xiaonuan’s father mentioned that the child was diagnosed with congenital heart malformation, including a narrowed aorta, unclosed arterial duct, and atrial septal defect, and underwent surgeries on November 5th and 21st at the cardiovascular surgery department of the Second Xiangya Hospital. Sadly, she passed away on November 24th.

The father of Xiaonuan stated that during the first surgery on November 5th, the doctors informed the family that the success rate was over 90% and that it was a simple procedure to remove the narrow blood vessels to restore her heart to normal. However, after two weeks, they were informed that another surgery was necessary.

“After the first surgery, I saw her face turning purple, but the doctor said it was normal. On the 24th, the doctor notified us that the child’s heart had stopped suddenly and she had passed away before 5 o’clock. They then removed the oxygen tube and ECMO (artificial heart-lung machine) from the child without notifying the family,” Xiaonuan’s father expressed.

The family raised questions about potential surgical errors by Dr. Wu, the director of the cardiovascular surgery department of the hospital, and have been actively seeking justice online since the incident.

The father of Xiaonuan mentioned that the family has already had a meeting with the hospital to proceed with an autopsy on the child. Their main objective is to uncover the truth and seek justice.

According to the Tianyancha platform, the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University has been involved in multiple medical malpractice disputes and has been administratively penalized for failing to fill in medical records as required.

In previous reports, on October 31, 2024, Vice Director Liu Xiangfeng of the Trauma and Emergency Medicine Center at the Second Xiangya Hospital was sentenced to 17 years in prison for illegally removing patients’ normal organs, and even engaging in illicit organ transplants.

On May 8, 2024, intern doctor Luo Shuaiyu from the Transplantation Department of the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University tragically died in a fall. Prior to his death, he had reported to the hospital’s management involvement in illegal organ harvesting and trafficking.
