Reddit, the American social media platform, is about to reach a significant milestone as S&P Dow Jones Indices announced on August 13th that Reddit (NYSE: RDDT) will officially be included in the S&P 500 index before the opening of the market on August 18th (Tuesday), replacing the real estate investment trust company AvalonBay Communities (NYSE: AVB).
AvalonBay is currently undergoing an acquisition by another S&P 500 component stock, the residential real estate investment trust company Equity Residential (NYSE: EQR). The transaction is expected to be completed soon, with the two companies merging into a new entity named Vivmark Residential (NYSE: VMRK), which will continue to be part of the S&P 500 index.
The news of Reddit’s inclusion in the S&P 500 has quickly gained market attention. According to reports from Reuters, following the announcement of the index adjustment by S&P Dow Jones Indices, Reddit’s stock price surged over 12% in pre-market trading on August 14th (Friday).
Morgan Stanley analysts estimate that with Reddit entering the S&P 500, passive funds tracking the index may need to buy approximately 16.7 million shares of Reddit stock on the open market. This quantity is nearly three times the average daily trading volume of Reddit since its listing in 2024.
The current status of Reddit today is a far cry from its appearance over two decades ago. In 2005, when founders Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian applied for the first round of the startup incubator Y Combinator (YC), they submitted a project called My Mobile Menu, a mobile food ordering app. This concept did not receive approval from YC.
Subsequently, YC founder Paul Graham proposed a completely different direction to the duo: to create the “front page of the internet.” And thus, Reddit was born.
After the website went live, the founders encountered a simple yet significant issue: without users, there would be no content.
To avoid the new site looking barren, Huffman and Ohanian personally created hundreds of fake accounts with different usernames to populate Reddit with content, giving it a more vibrant appearance. This approach helped the site navigate through its initial cold start phase. Today, Reddit boasts a massive user community.
Over two decades later, Reddit is now officially part of the S&P 500 index.
Simultaneously, the current adjustment of S&P 500 component stocks also involves a sizable real estate merger. AvalonBay will merge with the real estate investment trust company Equity Residential. Upon completion of the transaction, the new entity will adopt the name Vivmark Residential and trade under the ticker symbol VMRK on the New York Stock Exchange.
According to information released by both companies, the market capitalization of the merged Vivmark is approximately $53 billion, with an enterprise value of around $71 billion. The company owns over 180,000 rental apartments, positioning itself at the forefront of the U.S. residential rental market.
The name Vivmark also carries its own significance. “Viv” comes from the Latin word “vivere,” meaning “to live fully,” while “mark” signifies quality, excellence, and lasting impact. As planned, after the completion of the merger, the new company will begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol VMRK on August 18, 2026, and continue to be part of the S&P 500 index.
