【Epoch Times October 13, 2026】In Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, a man surnamed Wan mistakenly clicked on an insurance advertisement while watching short videos and ended up having over 72,400 yuan (RMB) automatically deducted for insurance premiums for nearly 3 years. When he tried to seek justice, he faced excuses and rejections.
According to a report by Da Jiang News under Jiangxi Daily on October 13, Mr. Wan stated that the deductions began in 2022 when he clicked on an ad by mistake while watching short videos, with no intention of buying insurance. Because he was busy with his business at the time, he didn’t pay attention to the notifications of monthly automatic bank account deductions until May 2025 when he discovered two insurance policies continuously deducting fees. The total deductions for the two policies amounted to 72,445 yuan.
Wan said, “I never actively purchased insurance from the beginning, nor did I ever sign anything.” Upon realizing the deductions, he immediately contacted the customer service of Water Drop Insurance, requesting to see the complete policies and asking for the phone recordings of the initial agreement to confirm whether he had knowingly purchased insurance. However, the customer service representatives refused to provide the policies or recordings, only saying, “You can apply for a refund, but only about 7,000 yuan can be refunded.” Wan found such handling unacceptable.
To investigate the insurance purchase process, Wan visited the Jiangxi Branch of Water Drop Insurance Broker Co., Ltd. on September 15, 2026, but found the company’s gate closed.
After receiving Wan’s complaint, a reporter from Da Jiang News contacted the relevant person in charge at Water Drop Insurance, who said they would coordinate with the relevant department to handle the issue. However, when in the presence of the reporter, Wan repeatedly called customer service but was still refused the policies and recordings.
On September 29, a customer service representative sent an electronic policy from Junlong Life Insurance, without Wan’s signature on it, and another electronic policy could not be opened. The explanation provided by Water Drop Insurance’s customer service was that online insurance purchases do not require the signature of the insured on the policy, and the phone recordings related to the purchase are considered internal data and cannot be provided to customers.
Wan was extremely puzzled by this: With insurance being a significant purchase, offline insurance purchases require reading the terms and personally signing, so why should online purchases simplify all confirmation steps? How can it be proven as one’s genuine intention to buy solely by automatic deductions from the system?
Lawyer Kuang Xianping from Jiangxi Yingshanhong Law Firm pointed out that according to the “Regulations on the Supervision of Internet Insurance Business” and other regulations, insurance institutions conducting internet insurance business should provide policies and invoices to customers and conduct follow-up visits by verifying customer identities through networks, phones, etc., to ensure that customers are promptly and fully informed of the essential contents of insurance contracts.
He stated that the insurance sales process should protect consumers’ genuine purchasing intentions in a clear and concise manner and should not deprive consumers of the right to choose independently through methods like pre-checking boxes or restricting cancellation of automatic deductions.
Kuang Xianping mentioned that if the involved policies lack the insured’s signature and Water Drop Insurance cannot provide confirmation recordings and complete certificates, it would be difficult to prove that the consumers had voluntarily agreed to the insurance. If the situation is found to be true, it may involve illegal sales and implied insurance, and Water Drop Insurance should refund all premiums.
Wan stated that the continuous deductions for the two insurance policies over nearly three years have caused him ongoing financial pressure. He hopes that Water Drop Insurance will respect consumers’ legal rights, provide complete insurance information according to regulations, address his request for a full refund promptly and properly.
As of now, Wan’s request for a full refund has yet to be resolved.
