Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi, India on September 12 to attend the BRICS Summit, only to be met with protests from Tibetan activists. Some protesters chased Xi’s official car while shouting slogans.
Prior to Xi Jinping’s arrival in New Delhi on the 12th, two red flag N701 vehicles were transported to the city, their bodies tightly covered with black car covers, catching the attention of the public as they drove through the streets of India.
On the night of the 12th, as Xi Jinping was driven through the streets of New Delhi in his official car, a large group of Tibetans carrying lion flags chased after his car, chanting slogans such as “Free Tibet, Down with Xi Jinping, China (Chinese Communist Party) get out of Tibet, Tibet will prevail,” attempting to breach the security cordon to express strong protest. Videos of the incident quickly went viral on social media.
Xi Jinping’s secret visit to India was met with strong protests from Tibetan people as his convoy passed through the streets of New Delhi.
The Phayul news website, which specializes in reporting on Tibetan issues, reported that around 9:45 pm on the evening of September 12, members of the “Tibetan Youth Congress” (TYC) from 15 regional chapters gathered on Bhairon Marg street outside the venue to protest Xi Jinping’s attendance at the summit. That night, a total of 64 Tibetan activists were arrested on the spot by the Delhi police.
Prior to this, on September 11, Voice of Tibet reported that several hundred Tibetans held a protest march in New Delhi opposing Xi Jinping’s visit to India, and called on India and the international community to pay attention to the Chinese Communist Party’s high-pressure assimilation policies in Tibet.
