The co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Megan Romer, in an interview with Fox News on Sunday, July 26, detailed several key points of the organization, sparking controversy and attention both online and in the media. Democrats are concerned that this could have a negative impact on the party’s midterm elections.
Romer openly confirmed various positions of the organization during a rapid-fire interview with Fox News host Shannon Bream. These positions include abolishing the Senate, replacing the presidency with a new system, replacing the Supreme Court, dismantling the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), ultimately eliminating borders, providing amnesty to unauthorized residents, cutting Pentagon funding, and setting the goal of abolishing prisons.
The video of this interview quickly spread across major social media platforms and cable news channels, sparking widespread discussion. Moderates within the Democratic Party are worried that these statements could become fodder for Republican attacks in the midterm elections.
Democratic strategist Steve Schale pointed out that candidates who originally wanted to talk to voters about lowering prices and discussing everyday life issues now must first explain that they are not “crazy.” This diversion is causing campaigns to veer off track, with candidates having to spend limited resources clarifying their positions.
Another Democratic strategist, Hyma Moore, warned that such statements could not only impact Democratic Party candidates supported by the Democratic Socialists of America but also drag down the entire Democratic Party.
House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized the Democratic Party on social media, saying they are “welcoming barbarians into the gate” and describing the dispute between Republicans and Democrats as “common sense versus communism.”
Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas bluntly stated, “These people are crazy.”
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise noted that Democratic socialist candidates endorsed by Bernie Sanders and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani are winning elections across the country at a faster rate than expected.
Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania publicly criticized this and questioned why the Democratic Party is reluctant to distance itself from the Democratic Socialists of America.
It is worth noting that in recent times, candidates supported by the DSA have achieved successes in primaries in states like New York, Colorado, and Michigan, bringing more attention to the political impact of such statements.
The controversy has also extended to local elections. Republican Tom Tiffany, running for Governor of Wisconsin, linked Romer’s remarks to Democratic primary candidate Francesca Hong in the same state, alleging past advocacy for abolishing police, prisons, and the Senate.
Hong’s campaign spokesperson, Allison Geyer, rebutted by stating that Hong never advocated for abolishing the Senate and that discussions about removing police and prisons were only idealistic long-term goals and not part of current gubernatorial policies.
In Iowa’s House race, Republican candidate Joe Mitchell accused opponent Lindsay James of supporting similar views, which was denied by James’ spokesperson, Jackson Smith.
Interestingly, some members of the Democratic Socialists of America also expressed concerns about Romer’s interview.
One member suggested that the organization’s work should focus on engaging in dialogue with the public rather than prematurely scaring off potential working-class voters with definitive statements on Fox News. They hope that the leadership of the association will reconsider their communication strategy.
Democratic fundraiser John Morgan believes that the majority of independent voters will eventually take offense to such views and predicts that Republicans will utilize this interview to criticize the Democratic Party in the midterm elections.
