Teresa Teng announces retirement at the end of next year, revealing the final performance time

Taiwanese legendary singer Tsai Chin, known for songs like “Gentle Like You” and “The Forgotten Times,” officially announced her retirement from the stage. After December 31, 2027, she will no longer sing on stage, marking the end of her illustrious 48-year career in the entertainment industry, retiring from the music scene in 2028.

On October 11, during an event held in Beijing, Tsai Chin made the emotional announcement to the audience on stage, saying, “I have two things to tell you. The first is, perhaps this is the second to last time you will see Tsai Chin perform. Until the last day of 2027, Tsai Chin will no longer sing on stage ever again.” She continued, “I don’t believe there’s such a thing as the eternal Tsai Chin, but I hope you will cherish me in the future, just as I cherish all of you.”

Expressing her gratitude to all her fans present at the event, Tsai Chin acknowledged the loneliness of a singer without kindred spirits. After singing “Gentle Like You,” she emotionally remarked, “This song does not live within time, but within eternity.”

At 68 years old, Tsai Chin, renowned as the queen of low-pitched songs in the Chinese music industry, has had numerous widely acclaimed songs in the Mandarin-speaking world. In recent years, she had often mentioned her intentions to bid farewell to the stage, hoping to gracefully part ways with her audience at the peak of her condition.

Last month, Tsai Chin held four “Farewell Not Goodbye” tour concerts at Taipei International Convention Center, attracting around 12,000 fans. During the concerts, she revealed the challenges of performing in high heels due to her aging body. She also disclosed her heightened sensitivity to light after years of exposure to strong stage lights, now needing sunglasses to navigate life in the normal world. Tsai Chin reflected on dedicating her youth and health to the stage she loved so dearly.

Many fans expressed sadness at Tsai Chin’s sudden yet well-considered decision, but they also showered the legendary singer with warm blessings as she bids adieu to the Mandarin music scene.
