Hong Kong actor Anthony Wong has recently caused speculation about his departure from the Hong Kong entertainment industry with his Facebook post in July, saying “It’s time to say goodbye to the Hong Kong stage.” On August 3, he shared an update, addressing rumors that he was sleeping on the streets in Taiwan by posting photos of a hotel restroom and humorously remarking that he was actually sleeping in that bathroom.
In his Facebook post on August 3, Wong humorously wrote, “Rumors say I’m sleeping on the streets in Taiwan, but no, stop guessing, I’m sleeping in this bathroom.” He attached multiple photos of the bathroom, which features a predominantly white color scheme, a separate shower area, a large mirror, a standalone bathtub with a towel bearing his English name “Anthony Wong” hanging on it. The overall style is simple yet elegant.
The post garnered a lot of comments from netizens saying things like “I would like to sleep in that bathroom,” “Should have good dreams in there,” “Now everyone knows the truth, Anthony, your bathroom looks great but also funny,” and “This bathroom is bigger than many people’s houses.”
On July 12, Wong sudden wrote on Facebook, “It’s time to say goodbye to the Hong Kong stage,” hinting at a move towards “a bigger stage in the world.” Although he did not provide further explanation, this sparked curiosity among the public. Given his frequent work in Taiwan in recent years and obtaining a Taiwan Employment Gold Card, many speculate whether his work has been influenced. The post also received encouraging comments from people expressing that “Hong Kong is not the same as before,” “Taiwan welcomes you,” and “You deserve a bigger stage.”
Anthony Wong faced a complete ban from Mainland China after supporting the Hong Kong “Umbrella Movement” in 2014. Over the years, he has had limited opportunities to participate in “Mainland-Hong Kong co-productions,” mostly appearing in stage plays and independent films. In response to allegations of being a wanderer in Taiwan, Wong directly retorted, “You’re thinking too much.”
On April 15 this year, Anthony Wong spoke to independent media “Green Beans” about his views on the current Hong Kong film and television creative environment. He described it as a world of “unknown” without rules and expressed his refusal to participate. He emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity and principles in turbulent times, not following the crowd, and shared how his mindset has shifted through painting for self-healing.
At 64 years old, Anthony Wong has been in the industry for over 40 years, winning three Hong Kong Film Awards, four Golden Horse Awards, the Hong Kong Drama Award for Best Actor, and the TVB Star Awards for Best Actor. He is the first actor in Hong Kong to achieve the “Triple Crown” of Best Actor, Best Actor in a Drama, and Best Actor in TVB awards.
