The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently issued a detention order for an illegal immigrant suspected of attempting to snatch a Virginia police officer’s weapon, urging Fairfax County officials not to release Nehemia Noel Fuentes-Banegas.
This illegal immigrant hails from Honduras and entered the U.S. illegally in 2022 through Texas.
He is accused of trying to grab a local officer’s weapon during a skirmish in northern Virginia on Tuesday, July 28.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that police received a report on Tuesday that a man, after getting into an argument in Annandale, left his residence carrying two knives. Fairfax County police said the man stabbed himself before fleeing into a nearby wooded area.
DHS reported that as officers searched the woods, Fuentes-Banegas suddenly emerged from the bushes, attempting to wrestle a gun from an officer.
Authorities said one officer fired shots while another used a department-issued Taser, with the bullets grazing Fuentes-Banegas’ shoulder. Fuentes-Banegas was ultimately arrested and charged for attempting to disarm law enforcement.
ICE has issued an arrest warrant, requesting Fairfax County to notify federal authorities before releasing Fuentes-Banegas.
DHS stated that Fuentes-Banegas entered the U.S. illegally through Texas in 2022 and was later released during the Biden administration. In a statement, DHS said, “This illegal immigrant from Honduras attacked a law enforcement officer and attempted to snatch the officer’s weapon.”
The statement urged Governor Abigail Spanberger and her protectionist political colleagues to commit to not releasing this dangerous criminal. The statement also criticized Spanberger for advocating sanctuary policies, ending the 287(g) agreements signed by former Governor Glenn Youngkin, which restricted the state’s cooperation with ICE, turning Virginia into a “hotbed of illegal immigrant crime.”
