In a shocking family murder case in Pennsylvania, USA, a 79-year-old woman was brutally stabbed to death in her own home at the end of June. She sustained a total of 245 stab wounds all over her body, and the perpetrator turned out to be the victim’s daughter-in-law. The suspect, Mengqi “Mona” Zhang, has been charged with first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault, with the court proceedings revealing details about the motive behind the crime.
The incident took place on June 28th, with the police being called to a residence on Schenley Road in Gilpin Township, Armstrong County, after the 79-year-old woman, Rosalind Cooper, was found dead in the dining room. The county coroner described Cooper’s body as “horrific,” with numerous stab wounds on her legs, neck, abdomen, hands, and wrists, leading to her cause of death being extensive blood loss.
Cooper’s body was initially discovered by her son, Nathaniel Cooper, who later testified that the perpetrator was none other than his wife, Mengqi Zhang. The couple had been married for 12 years, but tensions escalated dramatically on the day of the crime. According to Nathaniel’s testimony, the atmosphere was calm until he casually mentioned that his sister Kara D. Long was planning to visit their parents from Florida, triggering a sudden and intense reaction from his wife.
Nathaniel recalled how Zhang’s demeanor changed drastically when she learned about the impending visit, highlighting a long-standing feud between Zhang and his sister dating back to 2017, which had manifested in constant social media conflicts and a strained relationship.
Later that day, Zhang left the house but returned with a bloodied knife, admitting to her husband that she had just wounded her mother-in-law. Initially thinking it was a joke, Nathaniel rushed to his mother’s aid and was horrified to find her lying in a pool of blood, prompting him to call for help.
The victim’s husband, Steve Cooper, had briefly left the house at around 4 p.m. to close up their family-owned Kiski River Campsites across the street on Schenley Road, a routine interruption that provided the perpetrator with an opportunity to carry out the attack.

During the trial, translator Steven Law assisted with Zhang’s interrogation, testifying that she admitted to engaging in a dispute with her mother-in-law before grabbing a knife from the kitchen and inflicting wounds on her hands and abdomen. Law also revealed that Zhang had barricaded herself in a nearby house that evening, confronting responding officers and threatening to harm them if they entered the premises.
It wasn’t until around 1:10 a.m. on June 29th that Zhang finally surrendered and was taken into custody after a standoff with the police. Zhang confessed during questioning that she had brought the knife home, cleaned the weapon and the clothes she wore during the incident, and even took a shower.
Following the preliminary court ruling in July, Mengqi “Mona” Zhang is facing criminal homicide and intentional assault charges, currently being held without bail at the Armstrong County Jail as the case awaits trial. The formal trial date is yet to be determined, as Zhang’s guilt or innocence will ultimately be decided by the court based on the evidence presented.
