According to Gathamist and other sources, New York State Governor Hoch is expected to distribute tax refund checks to eligible New York State residents before this year’s general election day in November, with a maximum amount of $200. This $1 billion tax refund program is included in the new fiscal year budget, aimed at alleviating the economic pressures brought on by recent inflation for New Yorkers. It is estimated that over 8 million people statewide will receive the checks. Under the legislation, taxpayers who became full-time residents of New York State in 2024, with a married income not exceeding $30,000 and single income not exceeding $15,000, are eligible to receive the refund. Qualified individuals will receive the checks gradually without the need for additional cumbersome applications.
Two men in New Jersey plead guilty to supporting terrorist organizations

Attorney General James urges federal oversight of illegal phone calls
New York Attorney General James announced on July 29 that she has joined forces with law enforcement agencies from 49 states to urge the federal government to strengthen the “know your customer” (KYC) screening mechanisms for telecommunications companies, which require phone companies to verify the identity and business type of users making calls through their networks. This action aims to closely monitor international and domestic phone scams, prevent fraudsters from using fake numbers (spoofing) for telecom fraud and harassment, and safeguard people’s financial and privacy security. Data shows that Americans lost $2 billion in 2025 due to phone and text message fraud.
17-year-old teen dies in car accident near City Hall
A serious traffic accident occurred near New York City Hall on Wednesday, July 29. A 17-year-old teen riding an electric bicycle collided with an SUV and was later pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital.
