New York City has recently discovered that some unlicensed grocery stores and small supermarkets have been found mixing cannabis beverages containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with regular soda, juice, and other drinks on the same shelves. Some of these products have packaging that closely resembles regular beverages, leading to safety hazards such as consumers mistakenly purchasing and consuming them.
Under New York State regulations, cannabis products containing THC can only be sold by retailers licensed by the State Cannabis Management Office (OCM). The products must also comply with testing, packaging, and labeling requirements. However, despite ongoing efforts by the state government to crackdown on illegal cannabis shops, some unlicensed stores are suspected of illegally selling related products. Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal has reported violations to the state’s Cannabis Management Office, resulting in the temporary removal of related products from shelves, but they reappeared later, raising concerns about the effectiveness of enforcement.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States warns that adults who ingest excessive THC may experience symptoms such as anxiety, nausea, and increased heart rate. In contrast, children are more likely to experience severe symptoms like drowsiness, confusion, and loss of balance after ingesting, with some cases requiring hospitalization.
Many Chinese residents interviewed expressed concerns about THC-infused cannabis beverages infiltrating general retail stores and being mixed with regular drinks for sale, increasing the risk of consumers purchasing them unintentionally. They believe that this poses a serious threat to public health and safety.
“This phenomenon is absolutely unacceptable,” said a teacher from Brooklyn, Mr. Zhong, in an interview with the newspaper. Mixing cannabis-infused beverages with regular drinks exposes risks directly within reach of children, seriously threatening the health and safety of students. “This kind of thing cannot be allowed to continue.”
Mr. Zhong believes that in addition to government crackdowns, the media should also raise awareness to inform more citizens of the existing risks. He also reminds parents and teachers to instruct children on how to identify beverages with safety hazards, recommending purchases from reputable large supermarkets for peace of mind.
Ms. Zhou Minna, a parent in Queens, was shocked and outraged by this phenomenon. She stated, “In a country like the United States with the rule of law, it is beyond imagination that such incidents could occur.”
Ms. Zhou believes that some businesses, in pursuit of profit, disregard the safety and lives of customers, especially children. “This practice is simply morally corrupt.” Upon learning that such events are not isolated incidents, she urged the government and relevant authorities to take stricter enforcement measures, thoroughly inspect illegal cannabis product retailers, prevent similar incidents from recurring, and safeguard the consumption safety of community residents.
