Former director of Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital accused of receiving nanny-like services

Former director of Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, Zuo Guoqing, has been expelled from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The official report accuses Zuo of accepting “nanny-style services” for free.

According to the Chongqing Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection of the CCP on June 5th, former CCP committee member and director of Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, Zuo Guoqing, was “expelled from the CCP and had his retirement benefits revoked for serious violations of duty and suspected bribery crimes,” and has been transferred for review and prosecution.

Public records show that Zuo Guoqing, born in October 1963, holds a Master’s degree in medicine, is a professor, and a chief physician. He has previously served as the vice president of the Second Hospital affiliated with Chongqing Medical University and as the director of Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital. He was under investigation by the end of 2024.

The latest official report indicates that Zuo Guoqing’s corrupt behaviors involve multiple aspects including pharmaceutical procurement, engineering contracting, and personnel appointments. The report states that he sought benefits for others in the selection and appointment of cadres and accepted money and goods; he also received “nanny-style services” at no cost from the service recipient, and so on.

Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital is the largest tertiary Grade A traditional Chinese medicine hospital in Chongqing. In 2022, the former CCP secretary and deputy director of Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, Wang Shoufu, was also investigated.

It is reported that since the beginning of 2025, multiple managers of Traditional Chinese Medicine hospitals within the CCP have been implicated, including former CCP secretary of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Wu Jibiao, and former CCP secretary of Yanzhou District Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital in Jining City, Shandong Province, Kong Qingmin.

In an earlier case from 2024, the CCP secretary of the First TCM Hospital in Yiyang City, Hunan Province, Xiong Jianqing, was also investigated.
