On Monday before dawn, federal agents from the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) raided the residence of Democratic U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar in Washington, D.C., according to Fox News footage. Multiple HSI agents, wearing their distinctive jackets, appeared at Omar’s residence around 6 a.m. on Monday.
The U.S. Department of Justice spokesperson confirmed in a written statement to mainstream media outlets like Fox and Reuters that a search warrant obtained by the Department of Justice and authorized by the court was executed by HSI in the Washington, D.C. area. The statement emphasized that this law enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.
However, the Department of Justice has not disclosed specific details of the case, and there is no indication that Omar has been criminally charged. Omar’s congressional office has not issued an official response to the search.
Regarding the core motivation of the search, information from federal officials speaking on condition of anonymity cited by Fox News and the Associated Press pointed to the focus of the criminal investigation being on immigration application documents from Omar’s childhood.
Omar, who was born in Somalia, came to the United States with her family during her childhood to escape conflict, and her early immigration forms were filled out by her deceased father.
Tom Homan, former Ice Director, stated in a Fox interview in September that federal agencies were investigating Omar. Homan emphasized that no one, including a member of Congress, is above the law if they violate immigration laws or are involved in marriage fraud.
However, when pressed by reporters about whether the government had concrete evidence, Homan declined to disclose specific details at that time.
Omar has also been accused of “allegedly committing marriage fraud to assist others in obtaining green cards.” However, Reuters Fact Check previously reported that to date, no official legal evidence confirming her immigration fraud has been publicly released, and Omar has vehemently denied the allegations multiple times.
Besides immigration issues, Omar has recently faced ethical scrutiny due to discrepancies in her personal financial disclosures.
According to publicly available financial reports, in an earlier filing, Omar valued a risk investment company and vineyard assets she co-owned with her husband, Tim Mynett, at between $6 million to $30 million. However, in subsequent amended filings, the total value of the couple’s assets was significantly reduced to between $18,000 to $95,000.
Taking into account the student loans and credit card debt they both carried, their net assets could even be negative. Omar’s office and legal representatives later clarified through The Wall Street Journal and CBS that the initial multimillion-dollar valuation was a severe reporting error made by her husband’s accountant.
According to reports by The Washington Times, after Omar voluntarily submitted the amendments and cooperated with the Office of Congressional Ethics’ initial inquiries, the ethics office confirmed it was an unintentional accounting mistake. The office recently dismissed the allegations of misconduct regarding this case.
Whether the HSI federal agents’ search operation will lead to new criminal charges remains to be seen as the Department of Justice further discloses developments.
