The New York City Emergency Management Agency (NYCEM) and meteorological experts issued a warning on Sunday, August 2, that the greater New York area would experience multiple rounds of heavy rainfall starting from late Sunday night until Monday morning, August 3. This weather event poses a high risk of localized flooding and will present a serious challenge for Monday morning commuters.
AccuWeather has officially designated Monday as an “AccuWeather Alert Day.” Weather forecasts indicate that this rainfall will sweep through New York City starting from late Sunday night. Due to the possibility of thunderstorms lingering over the same area, intense rainfall hitting the highly urbanized city center could easily lead to flash flooding in a short period.
The city’s Emergency Management Agency forecasts that by Tuesday, the accumulated rainfall across the city will generally range from 0.60 to 1 inch, with some areas possibly receiving even higher amounts.
Officials specifically warn that intense rainfall in a short period can easily result in flooding on streets, highways, underpasses of overpasses, and basements.
Although the rainfall will be frequent, Monday will not see continuous heavy rain all day. The humidity will be high, and the expected high temperature will be around 81 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 27.2 degrees Celsius).
In preparation for the impending heavy rain, various administrative departments in New York City have begun deploying resources early, including sending personnel to clean drainage wells, catch basins, and street garbage in all districts to reduce the risk of blockages in the drainage system leading to flooding.
The Emergency Management Agency advises residents to minimize non-essential travel during severe weather, avoid driving or walking through flooded road sections.
During thunderstorms, it is essential to stay indoors in a safe area to avoid lightning strikes.
Residents living in basements should immediately move to a higher floor in a safe area if they notice signs of water accumulation in the vicinity or indoors.
