On Sunday, August 2nd, in the northwestern region of Pakistan, a suicide bombing attack outside a police station resulted in at least 14 deaths, including multiple police officers and civilians, with over 20 people injured.
The explosion occurred in Kabal town in the Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The incident happened during a protest rally.
According to reports from the Associated Press, Bilal Faizi, a spokesperson for the emergency services department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, stated that the attacker targeted a group of civilians chanting slogans against armed militants and demanding peace. Police official Omar Khan mentioned that the casualties included 9 civilians and 5 police officers.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan condemned the attack that took place on Sunday. In their statements, they expressed condolences to the families of the victims, wished a speedy recovery for the injured, and instructed relevant departments to ensure the best medical treatment for the wounded. Zardari and Sharif also affirmed that Pakistan will continue to combat terrorism until it is completely eradicated.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, located on the northern border of Pakistan, is currently facing escalating insurgency from the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militant group.
No organization has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing attack this past Sunday. However, there are suspicions that TTP might be behind it. As per reports from Agence France-Presse, the police chief of Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stated that in another incident, a homemade bomb exploded in the city, injuring four police officers, and TTP claimed responsibility for that attack.
A military spokesperson mentioned on Friday, July 31st, that this year alone, attacks by armed insurgents and subsequent operations have resulted in the deaths of 819 security personnel and civilians.
Pakistan has previously attributed violent incidents in the border regions to armed activities originating from Afghanistan. However, the Taliban government denies any involvement from Afghanistan.
