Recently, actress Wang Gege (real name Wang Xiao), who was crowned the “Queen of Short Dramas” in mainland China, revealed on a program that she permanently lost hearing in one ear due to a scene involving a slap during a filming. Many fans were shocked and heartbroken upon hearing this news.
On a variety show “Sister, Wake Up” recently, Wang Gege recalled an incident from 2019 where she was filming a short drama and had to be slapped in a crucial scene. Originally planned as a staged slap, the male actor she was acting opposite suddenly exerted full force, sending her flying and crashing into a nearby chair. The intense pain hit her instantly, but fearing to lose the hard-earned opportunity, she endured in silence and even forced herself to complete the subsequent crying scene with gritted teeth.
To make matters worse, after filming the scene with the slap, Wang Gege did not seek medical attention immediately. Instead, she bravely continued to film a scene where she had to jump into water, causing a significant amount of water to enter her ear, leading to a severe case of otitis media and a perforated eardrum.
It was only after six months when her family noticed that she was unresponsive to conversations from one side, that she sought medical help. The doctors then discovered that her condition had deteriorated to the point where the eardrum was completely compromised, resulting in complete deafness in one ear.
Despite strong recommendations from doctors to undergo surgery immediately, Wang Gege hesitated because it would require shaving off about 4 inches of her hair. Being at a critical point in her career, she feared that a bald head would greatly affect her public image and job opportunities. As a result, she postponed the surgery, missing the golden treatment window, and her hearing remains unrecoverable to this day.
Wang Gege expressed that the loss of hearing in one ear has made it difficult for her to distinguish the source of sounds or understand conversations in noisy environments, affecting her daily life. What started as a simple filming accident has resulted in permanent hearing damage. Wang Gege’s heartbreaking experience of “trading health for the future” has touched many, once again raising concerns about the safety of actors on film and television sets.
